On 7 July in Milan the meeting "Mesothelioma: let's network"

Fondazione Buzzi Unicem supports new forms of network for the treatment of pleural mesothelioma: "Mesothelioma: let's network" will be held in Milan on Friday 7 July, a national meeting between clinicians who work in centers with an interest in this pathology, located throughout the country, promoted by the TUTOR patient association (Rare thoracic tumours), with the involvement of oncologists, thoracic surgeons, radiotherapists and anatomo-pathologists.

In recent years there have been some relevant innovations both in the diagnosis and in the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. Italy has distinguished itself for having contributed substantially to research not only by enrolling numerous patients in international clinical trials, but also by promoting studies that have led to changes in clinical practice. However, much remains to be done to guarantee patients homogeneous therapeutic-assistance pathways throughout the national territory and to establish a consolidated group among the centers with a high volume of pathology to make collaboration ever more efficient and increase the strength to carry out academic research.

The aim of the conference is the creation of a network of dedicated centers on the national territory, which can be a reference for patients affected by this rare tumour. With approximately 1800 new cases diagnosed in Italy, pleural mesothelioma is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage due to late and non-specific symptoms. Its rarity and the interdisciplinary complexity in its clinical management often lead to a lack of homogeneity in the standards of care and a lack of shared therapeutic-care pathways, worsening the common problem of these patients of difficult access to high-level care. TUTOR considers the possibility of being able to interact and collaborate with a multidisciplinary scientific network with focus and expertise on pleural mesothelioma to be fundamental for the improvement and homogenization of therapeutic standards, for sharing treatment principles and treatment paths and above all for research support nationally and internationally on these rare pathologies.

In the scientific and organizational committee of the event there are Dr. Giovanni Luca Ceresoli, Referent for pleural mesothelioma at the Humanitas Gavazzeni hospital in Bergamo, Prof. Paolo Andrea Zucali, Head of the Section of Uroncology and rare tumors of the chest (mesotheliomas and thymomas) and DH Referent of Medical Oncology and Hematology of the IRCCS Humanitas Clinic of Rozzano, Dr. Federica Grosso, head of the mesothelioma structure of the Alessandria Hospital and of the Casale Hospital; Dr. Giuseppe Lo Russo Medical Oncologist at the Thoracic Oncology Unit of the National Cancer Institute of Milan, Dr. Giulia Pasello University Researcher at the University of Padua and medical director of the Veneto Oncological Institute, and for the TUTOR Laura Abate-Daga association , TUTOR president, and Susanna Leto di Priolo, Mesothelioma TUTOR referent.

The event was made possible thanks to the donation of the family of Pinuccia Bosco, a victim of asbestos, destined for a specific project in agreement with Dr. Federica Grosso: "Pinuccia was a combative woman who in her long journey never let the disease interfered with his life. In recent months you have asked us several times to continue our commitment to mesothelioma and I think there is no better project than the one proposed by this event to honor your memory ”.
